Hey everyone, it’s Brandon Damon here, and I’ve got something really exciting to share with you. Recently, I got a call from an old friend and mentor, DJ Houseshoes. If you know Houseshoes, you know that’s a sure sign he’s up to something big. His latest project, “Big Shoes,” is said to be his final foray into serious beat-making, and it’s a privilege to be part of it.
Now, let me take a moment to shine a spotlight on Big Tone—aka Anthony Large, aka Hodge Podge. I just discovered that Big Tone was featured on JDilla’s iconic “Welcome 2 Detroit” album. Can you believe it? I’ve been a huge fan of Big Tone for years, and it’s incredible to finally connect the dots between his work and the legendary JDilla. Sometimes, it’s the little surprises that make the journey even more special.
For this project, we had to get creative. With Houseshoes based in LA, Big Tone and I coordinated everything for the video shoot right here in Detroit. We brainstormed and decided on some locations, including spots close to Big Tone’s school and church on 7 Mile. I choose the graveyard location. It felt like the perfect backdrop for the heartfelt message in Big Tone’s verse.
The concept for the video came from the emotional depth of Big Tone’s lyrics. His verses felt like a conversation with someone from the past, and I wanted to capture that essence visually. That’s where the graveyard concept came in, with him talking to someone possibly diseased. I’m thrilled with how it turned out. This project allowed me to push the boundaries of my style, blending traditional effects with some innovative drone footage.
So, stay tuned! The “Big Shoes” video is not just a tribute to the artistry of DJ Houseshoes and Big Tone but also a reflection of the powerful connections and stories that music can tell. I can’t wait for you all to see it and experience the creative journey with us.
